Alex has a depth of experience in preparing new patent applications and prosecuting patent applications to grant, across a wide range of technologies. He is also active in obtaining design registrations. Alex has been involved in many disputes over patent and design infringement - representing both the holders of rights and alleged infringers - and is experienced in resolving disputes in a practical way.
He has obtained many patents for individual inventors and SMEs and finds it very rewarding to see inventions that he has worked on reach commercialisation. He has worked on building and maintaining substantial portfolios of patents for larger clients. Alex has successfully defended rights many times in the designs of clothing, footwear, and consumer goods, against competitors selling copied products.
Alex’s technical background is in pure physics, and while he enjoys working on cases which involve physics, he has become adept at handling cases over a wide variety of technologies, including automotive, construction, sports equipment, manufacturing and engineering of all kinds, medical instruments, robotics, oilfield exploration and drilling, and cleantech.
Alex holds an MSci in Physics.
His clients range from individual inventors to multinational corporations and include companies of all sizes in between. Each kind of client has different needs and priorities, and Alex enjoys advising on a wide range of situations. Alex finds it rewarding to work on a project from scratch with a small client, and particularly to defend the rights of smaller clients from larger infringers, working in a practical way and within a realistic budget. He also enjoys being involved in the development and handling of portfolios for larger clients.
Alex is a keen runner, although more and more of his time is spent watching his children in their sporting endeavours. He is a prolific reader and enjoys Scrabble and snowboarding.
