Russell has extensive experience working directly with the UK and European Patent Offices, as well as handling the prosecution of patent and design applications throughout the world – with particular experience in the US, China, India, Australia, and Japan. Russell also has particular experience in UKIPO hearings, EPO oppositions, and providing freedom-to-operate advice.
He regularly helps clients obtain patent protection for computer programs and other inventions which are very close to the exclusions from patentability in the UK and Europe. He has extensive experience assisting start-ups to maximise their portfolios in a cost-effective manner and has enjoyed notable successes in hearings and oppositions.
Russell has an electrical and electronic engineering background and has considerable experience in obtaining protection for computer programs. This includes experience dealing with blockchain technology, data management, hardware control, battery chargers and power supplies, sonar systems, and robotics. Russell has also handled applications for numerous inventions relating to civil engineering, props, scaffolding, petroleum and natural gas extraction, medical imaging systems and other medical devices.
Russell’s clients range from individual inventors to start-ups, through to multi-national corporations, all working in a variety of different industries, and based throughout the world.
Outside of work, Russell enjoys running, ice hockey and skating, as well as swimming and motorcycling.
