Ross has been in the patent profession for nearly 30 years and does a lot of opposition and appeal work before the EPO. He has also been involved in litigation before the UK Patents Court, Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court. He is also a certified European Patent Litigator.
Ross was part of the team that successfully defended a patent covering the TAXUS stent, which went all the way to the Supreme Court in the UK (Conor Medystems Inc. vs. Angiotech Pharmaceuticals Inc.) He was also the attorney responsible for the now much-cited Board of Appeal decision T1780/12, which dealt with the scope of the different formats of therapeutic use claims and double patenting before the European Patent Office. Ross is also very experienced in successfully running restoration actions before the EPO and the UK IPO.
With a technical background in biochemistry, Ross primarily specialises in providing advice in the fields of food technology, biotechnology, and pharmaceuticals including biologics and medical devices.
Ross works with a number of in-house patent attorneys in securing patent protection for their companies in the UK and in Europe. He also advises on enforcement strategies and „clearing the path“ strategies. He enjoys helping his clients to utilise patents as a commercial tool, and finds it rewarding to ensure they get the most benefit from it.
Ross has a B.Sc (Hons) in Biochemistry and an M.Sc in Management of Intellectual Property Law. In 2025, Ross achieved his European Patent Litigator certification in an academic year-long course hosted by the ERA Academy of European Law in conjunction with Maastricht University.
In his spare time, Ross runs the Junior section at Caldy Golf club; a position he has held for over seven years. He is also a season ticket holder at Liverpool Football Club and loves going to Anfield on match days.
