Dr Ryan Mitchell

Ryan represents clients before the UK and European patent offices. This involves drafting specifications, prosecuting patent applications to grant and defending or attacking granted patents in post-grant proceedings. Ryan also has experience in representing clients before the EPO Boards of Appeal.
Ryan is experienced in assisting clients with obtaining patent term extensions in the form of Supplementary Protection Certificates (SPCs). He was recently involved in overturning a decision of the EPO examining division during appeal to maintain the pendency of his client’s European patent application, and has also successfully defended a patent relating to anti-cancer therapeutics during EPO opposition proceedings.
Ryan’s technical background is in Biotechnology and he primarily works on life sciences cases ranging from cytotherapeutic medical devices to new cancer treatments.
He works with a plethora of clients, from new start-ups looking to obtain worldwide patent protection for inventions crucial to their business to large-size attorney firms who are looking to obtain patent protection in the UK and Europe for local patent applications that they may be prosecuting. This exposes him to a wide range of different clients.
He has a PhD in molecular cellular biology and undertook a research assistant position within Imperial College London’s department of medicine prior to joining Forresters in 2016. He also has a Master’s degree in Neuroscience and a BSc in Biomedical Science.
Ryan enjoys running – he ran the London marathon in 2021 and has participated in subsequent running events, albeit shorter distances. Ryan also enjoys baking (with various degrees of success) and getting lost in a good book!
