Emma joined Forresters in 2013, and is based in our Birmingham office. Emma has experience in all aspects of patent prosecution in the UK and Europe, and particular expertise representing clients in opposition proceedings before the European Patent Office.
Work Highlights
Emma works closely with attorneys around the world, to extend her clients’ portfolios overseas. From this Emma has obtained specialist knowledge of many patent systems including those of the USA, China, and Canada.
Much of Emma’s work involves advising clients on their freedom-to-operate, identifying infringement risks. She prides herself on providing commercially-focussed advice that allows clients to understand complex situations and make informed decisions.
Technical specialism
Emma’s background is in physics, with a focus on experimental particle physics. Emma researched mechanisms involving electroweak interactions and boson production as part of a PhD. Alongside that research, Emma maintained and supervised one of the detectors in the LHCb experiment at CERN.
Emma now works primarily with medical devices and technologies, heavy goods vehicles (particularly braking systems and wheel infrastructure), industrial processes (in particular printing technologies) and household appliances.
Emma’s Clients
The range of clients Emma works with is vast and varied, from one-person start-up companies to large multinational corporations. Emma enjoys working with both ends of the spectrum; working with smaller companies allows Emma to make a significant difference to their future business trajectory, whilst working with larger companies allows for better commercial appreciation of the company’s aims, helping Emma to determine how best to contribute to their overall IP strategy.
Interests
Whether she is growing things in the garden, walking her dog or travelling, Emma enjoys spending time outdoors outside of work.
