Work Highlights

Having had a keen interest in both electronics and constructing things at a young age, Andy chose to study for his degree in Integrated Engineering at Cardiff University, combining both mechanical and electrical engineering.

Andy first entered the world of IP in 2003, working as a Patent Examiner at the UK Intellectual Property Office, where he handled applications relating to internal combustion engines and jet engines. Realising he’d much rather represent applicants, Andy joined Forresters in 2004. To this day, Andy’s insightful knowledge of the examiner’s viewpoint allows him to offer a balanced perspective when handling objections, whilst robustly pursuing an applicant’s best interests.

Andy has been actively involved in opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office, hearings before the UKIPO, and regularly prepares validity and infringement opinions.

His broad technical background, inquisitive nature and thirst to learn about the latest innovations sees Andy handling a wide range of technologies. Rooted in his understanding of the mechanical and electrical fields, Andy prosecutes applications in areas including mass spectrometers, microfluidic devices, valves, pumps, rheometers, medical devices, construction equipment, ejection seats, exercise equipment, consumer products, engines and tribology.

Andy works for several multinational corporations with extensive worldwide IP portfolios and enjoys taking a collaborative approach with clients and attorneys in each jurisdiction to secure robust and commercially useful rights.

He also regularly advises start-ups and spin-offs in developing and implementing cost-effective filing strategies and is well-versed with the challenges these clients face.

In his spare time, Andy enjoys road cycling, running, skiing, DJing and, above all else, making his two children laugh.
