Matthew Shaw
Managing Partner
Matt is a very experienced attorney and has been with the firm since 1994. In addition to his primary trade mark practice, he frequently works on designs, and is a qualified UK and European Patent Attorney. He is a member of AIPPI and a regular attendee of INTA and ECTA. He has been the firm’s Managing Partner since April 2021.
Over his 30 years with Forresters, Matt has advised on worldwide IP filing strategies and portfolios, and been involved in many contentious proceedings, such as oppositions, cancellations and non-use revocations. He has particular experience in freedom-to-operate reviews (involving both trade marks and designs), as well as advising other professionals on M&A issues, business acquisitions, IP transfers and portfolio reviews. Matt is an active participant in various global IP meetings and conferences, around the world, helping to develop the firm’s extensive network of clients, friends and associates.
Matt is a graduate chemist and this technical background – unusual for trade mark practitioners – is often useful when ‘getting under the skin’ of clients’ new initiatives, brands and products. He remains qualified as a UK and European Patent Attorney, having dealt mainly with inventions in the mechanical arena for 20 years, before concentrating on trade marks.
Matt’s direct client base ranges from SMEs to large multinationals, operating in many sectors and locations around the world. In particular, he has a number of key clients within housewares, showers, automotive, motorsport, food & beverage, ‘tech’ and industrial lighting. He has a particular interest in contentious proceedings and dispute resolution, emphasising to his clients the importance of finding commercial and practical solutions to problems.
Outside of the office, Matt is a keen follower of motorsport, and can often be found by the side of a noisy racetrack. He is a keen supporter of Birmingham Royal Ballet, and enjoys travelling, reading, and meeting new people. He is a fluent French speaker (alongside conversational German) and keeps up to date with politics and current affairs. He is also a member of a wine-based private members’ club in St James’s, London.
