Thomas is a Trainee Patent Attorney. He joined Forresters in 2021, and is currently working towards becoming a fully qualified UK and European Patent Attorney.

Work highlights

Thomas enjoys meeting new and prospective clients to discuss their innovations and their IP portfolios.  Last year, he gained valuable experience by helping prepare for and attending a hearing with the UKIPO, in which Forresters successfully argued that our client’s invention is not excluded subject matter.

Technical specialism

Thomas is primarily involved in the prosecution of UK and European patent applications, advising clients of their options and preparing responses to office actions. Thanks to his background in Mechanical Engineering, Thomas is able to work within a wide range of technical areas including mechanical and electromechanical devices, including process control systems, medical devices, automotive components and systems.

Thomas’s Clients

Thomas enjoys working with clients of all sizes, from individual inventors and SMEs, to larger clients and international associates. He particularly enjoys tailoring his advice to the needs of each client, appreciating that these needs can vary depending on the size of the client and the industry they operate in.

Education & Training

Prior to joining Forresters, Thomas graduated from Coventry University in 2019 with a BEng in Mechanical Engineering. He continued his studies at the University of Warwick, graduating in 2020 with an MSc in Advanced Mechanical Engineering. His final research project at Warwick focused on how the divergence of drivetrain options in passenger cars and future energy mix scenarios across different territories would effect modular design, engineering and production in the automotive industry.

Thomas’s studies were supplemented by over 18 months of elective placements in automotive engineering consultancy where he worked on prototype vehicle development and engineering for OEMs. He also gained further industrial experience in a project management role with a global engineering services company.

Personal Interests

Outside of work, Thomas enjoys a range of sports, especially in Snowdonia, where he can often be found sea kayaking, paddle boarding, and exploring the mountains. He is also a season ticket holder at St Andrew’s, following the joys and sorrows of Birmingham City!
