Ian is experienced in drafting patent applications for the UK and Europe and prosecuting them to grant, as well as prosecuting applications around the globe, including in the US, China, India and Australia to name a few.  He is experienced in freedom to operate work and has a good level of experience in registered designs and has filed design applications with the UKIPO and EUIPO.

Work highlights

He frequently carries out freedom to operate matters, as well as identifying and assessing the technological interests and portfolio of a client’s competitors and assessing the current patent landscape for new concepts at their early developmental stages. Ian is also experienced with drafting patent applications for a variety of technical fields, including grid system reactive power services, acoustic devices, shives for beer and ale casks, and rotor arrangements for tiltrotor aircraft.

Ian also has a keen interest in how burgeoning advances in social media and the online world fit into the sphere of intellectual property rights, and has recently become involved with matters concerning how real-world products and designs may be protected from digital infringement.

Technical specialism

He works in all areas of mechanical engineering, with a particular interest in new and emerging technologies in Aerospace and Defence, and clean/green technologies. He also has an interest in UK and EU-registered designs.

Education & Training

Ian holds a Master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Birmingham. Ian spent his final year researching and developing robotic systems for use in medical applications such as IVF treatment.

He works with clients of all sizes, from individuals/sole traders up to multinational companies, in a variety of technological areas. Working with clients of different sizes and different needs offers different perspectives on the value of intellectual property and how it can most benefit their specific commercial needs.

Personal Interests

Outside of work, Ian likes to cook, play guitar, walk his dog, and do lots of DIY.
