According to a recent report by the European Patent Office (EPO), there has been a ~700% growth in the number of international patent applications relating to quantum technologies being published from 2010 to 2020, with a 1000% increase in national or regional patent applications for quantum-related technologies worldwide. That growth is against a backdrop of around 30% overall growth, across all technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this article,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/forresters-ip.com\/people\/dr-nick-palmer\/\">Dr Nick Palmer<\/a>, a partner at Forresters, looks at the rise of quantum technologies, and the impact this may have on a global scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EPO report is the first of three reports by the EPO looking at quantum technologies, with a report looking at trends in Quantum Simulation due later in 2023, and one on Quantum Communication expected next year.\u00a0 This series of reports follows the successful launch in 2018 of the Quantum Flagship initiative established by the European Union, with the aim of expanding scientific excellence in the area of quantum technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research into quantum technologies has seen steady growth over recent decades. The potential for applying quantum physics principals has long been acknowledged, but it is only recently that the focus has shifted towards practical implementations of the technology. \u00a0As that shift has taken place, we have seen clear growth in the volume of patents applications being filed for inventions employing quantum technologies.<\/p>\n<cite>Nick Palmer<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a background in computer science and a doctorate in machine learning, Nick has a keen interest in the rise of quantum computing. \u201cIt is clear that innovators in this sector are finding ways to apply quantum principles to many key technology areas. Applying quantum theory to computer technologies faces many challenges, not least in overcoming \u201cnoise\u201d caused by the electromagnetic interference present in modern systems. There is a push for fault tolerant quantum-computing using error correction techniques to mitigate these problems, which will lead to wider adoption of quantum devices in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning have been making the headlines recently, there is also a growing drive to apply quantum techniques in these areas.&nbsp;Statistics show that patent applications relating to machine learning have risen sharply in the past five years, and we are now also starting to see a corresponding growth in quantum-applied systems.&nbsp;We look forward to seeing this trend continue, and to working with inventors to protect their rights in this dynamic field.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Quantum computing is an area of growing interest.
