Background
Invertek Drives designs and manufactures variable frequency drives that are used to control motors, such as those found in pumps, in a wide variety of industrial and energy saving applications.
Invertek’s variable frequency drives control motors optimally, with the speed and torque of the motors matched to each specific application. This reduces energy consumption by ensuring that motors only run as fast and for as long as is required.
Challenge
Invertek approached Forresters for assistance in protecting its technology and branding to secure the company’s position in the marketplace and gain an edge over its competitors.
Action taken
Forresters carried out an in-depth IP audit to identify the intellectual property (IP) in Invertek’s business and products. As part of the IP audit, Dan Rusby-Gale and Alex Beattie advised Invertek on patent and design protection for its products. Kate Cruse advised on trade mark and brand protection.
The IP audit was funded by the Welsh Government and the audit was carried out in line with the IP Audit scheme that is now overseen by Innovate UK EDGE.
After identifying the IP in the business, Invertek engaged Forresters for assistance in protecting the IP. Forresters worked closely with Invertek’s R&D team and filed patent applications to protect key aspects of the variable speed drive technology. Forresters also filed applications to register the company name as a trade mark.
Result
Forresters secured patent and trade mark protection for Invertek in the company’s key markets. Invertek has since expanded into a global business with local offices or sales partners covering eighty countries worldwide.
