Carbon Capture Search Platform Introduced by the EPO

The EPO has a clean energy technologies platform highlighting inventions in this space. Recently, the EPO added to the platform by including a new section on carbon capture and storage. There is also a new filter added to the recently launched Deep Tech Finder, showing investment-ready startups with published patent applications in carbon capture technologies.

Whilst it is important to mitigate climate change by transitioning to renewable energy sources, one way of reducing carbon emissions from energy intensive processes (such as industrial processes) is to capture carbon dioxide before it is released to the atmosphere.

The EPO’s new carbon capture and storage platform provides an easily accessible source of information for this area of technology. The data sets are split into the most recent inventions and full historic results sets for the following sub areas of technology:

  • Absorption using liquid solvents
  • Adsorption on solid solvents
  • Biological separation
  • Cryogenic separation
  • Membrane separation
  • Chemical separation
  • Carbon dioxide storage

One interesting graph shows the trend in patent families published in the field of absorption using liquid solvents from 2004 to 2022. This is a growing area of technology where innovations will contribute to improvements in the efficiency of carbon capture.

In the same period there has been a steadier increase in patent families published in the field of carbon storage.
